Frequently Asked Questions

Where do we meet our guide?

All tours will begin from the Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve visitors center parking lot unless otherwise discussed. You will need to pay entrance into the park. Please be aware that lines can form to enter the park so we recommend arriving early just in case.

Can all ages do your tours?

Yes. All ages can tour with us and enjoy the experience. Some toddlers and younger may get sick with the rocking and bouncing of the vehicle, so we encourage caution with very young children. Tours to Zapata Falls require hiking through a rocky river bed with icy cold water. All ages and fitness levels can do it, but each person is responsible for their own safety and well-being during a tour. Please inform your guide of any health issues or areas of concern prior to embarking.

The day I would like to tour is not available. What can I do?

Reach out to us through email or the chat box on our website. If booking a tour within 48 hours of tour departure we require you to contact us prior to booking. We may also be fully booked on that day, or you could be looking on a day that is out of season. Tours within the Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve are seasonal (June-October) due to the backcountry road closing. However, we do offer tours year round with adjustments.

What if my tour gets cancelled?

We do everything we can to make sure every booked tour goes off without a hitch. However, if a tour is ever cancelled by Mountain Master you will receive a full refund. Tours can be cancelled due to unsafe weather, unsafe conditions on the Medano Pass Primitive Road, or safety issues that could arise on a previous tour that require attention. The National Park Service can close the road at any time due to unsafe conditions or other reasons and we must comply with all regulations set by the NPS. Our number one priority is always safety.

To cancel or reschedule your tour please contact us at least 7 days in advance and you will receive a full refund minus the service fee (3%).
Inside 7 days of your scheduled tour we cannot offer a full refund, as visits to the park are often planned in advance and it is unlikely we can fill your reservation in such a short amount of time.
Should we fill your reservation, a refund will be granted.
Thank you for understanding.

What should I bring on my tour?

We encourage all those touring with us to bring drinking water in a reusable bottle, a picture taking device, proper clothing for the weather, and any medications you may need for your health in the event of an episode or allergic reaction. If touring to Zapata Falls we recommend bringing towels to dry your feet and legs (or whole body if you're the adventurous type!) off after visiting the falls. Our guides have a first aid and emergency kit in their vehicles during all tours should it be needed.

Will I see animals on the tour?

We sure hope so! It is common to see various kinds of animals within the Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve and the surrounding areas. However, wildlife sightings are not guaranteed and we cannot control whether you see specific animals, or any wildlife at all. Trust us; we are hoping to see them just as much as you are!

Do I have to pay to enter the Great Sand Dunes National Park?

Yes. You will have to pay upon entry of the park, as the visitors center is within the park boundaries. Please see the Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve website for current rates. National Park Website
